Blancpain, the world’s oldest watch company, was founded in 1735 by Jehan-Jacques Blancpain in the Swiss Jura Mountains. Tradition and Innovation best describe the philosophy of Blancpain. There is no trace of a modern production line at Blancpain’s workshops. Blancpain is one of the few watch houses where watchmakers still assemble a movement from beginning to end. The highly precision handcrafted Blancpain collection of timepieces has a long history of innovation that includes many firsts and milestones in the watch industry. In 1926, Frèdèric-Emile Blancpain collaborated with English watchmaker John Harwood to develop the 1926 Harwood, the world’s first automatic wristwatch. Blancpain also developed the first modern diving watch, the Fifty Fathoms, in 1953. The Fifty Fathoms was selected for use by the United States Navy and was worn by underwater explorer and film maker Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Blancpain’s list of firsts in complicated timepieces is very extensive. Highlights include:

* 1983 - Moon Phase – Calibre 6395, the world’s smallest calendar moon-phase plate
* 1987 - Minute Repeater – Calibre 35, the world’s smallest minute repeater
* 1989 - Flying Tourbillon – Calibre 23, the world’s first and thinnest flying tourbillon wristwatch
* 1991 - 1735, the world’s most complicated series production automatic wristwatch, a tourbillon, perpetual calendar, moon phase, chronograph, split-second chronograph, minute repeater

Blancpain is devoted to only making high-quality precision mechanical wristwatches with a limited production of less than 10,000 per year. Each watch is still made by a single watchmaker from start to finish.
