Girard-Perregaux began in Geneva in 1791, when 19-year-old Jean-François Bautte signed his first watch. Bautte became a highly successful watchmaker and jeweler, counting European royalty among his clients and establishing commercial trade with Turkey, India and China. Around 1820, Bautte created a watch that could display two different times, independently set. Upon his death in 1837, the company passed to Jacques Bautte and Jean-Samuel Rossel and later to Constant Girard and his wife, Marie Perregaux, who was born to an important family of watch merchants. From the marriage of their two names, the manufacturer Girard-Perregaux was founded in 1856. Constant Girard-Perregaux was acclaimed for his research in tourbillion escapement. His famous Tourbillon with three gold Bridges was a gold medal winner in the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition and became an icon for the Girard-Perregaux firm. In 1880, Girard-Perregaux developed the first major commercial wrist watch for German naval officers, making two thousand wrist watches that featured a metal grid cover to protect the glass. It would take fifty years for the wrist watch style to catch on. Wrist watch sales exceeded pocket watches for the first time in 1930. In 1945, Girard-Perregaux introduced the Art deco style wrist watch model called the 1945. It was revived fifty years later as the now popular Vintage 1945. Girard-Perregaux has always been committed to innovation. The brand has registered nearly 80 patents over the years, building an exceptional heritage, particularly in terms of chronometry. For more than two centuries, Girard-Perregaux has distinguished itself with remarkable creations, including its emblematic Tourbillon with three gold Bridges. Girard-Perregaux timepieces are not mere reproductions of past successes, but innovative creations guided by the quest for excellence.
