In 1860 Edouard Heuer established a watchmaking workshop in St-Imier in the Swiss Jura. He patented his first chronograph in 1882. Heuer invented and patented the famous “Oscillating Pinion” in 1887, and it is still used today by leading watchmakers in their mechanical chronographs. Innovation in timepiece chronographs continued to be a focus for Heuer. In 1911, he received a patent for the "Time of Trip", the first dashboard chronograph designed for use in automobiles and aircraft. That same decade, Heuer introduced the first wrist chronograph timepieces and the "Micrograph", accurate to 1/100th of a second. Precision timekeeping led Heuer to create many timepieces for sporting events, especially auto racing. The timepieces were designed to be mounted on the dashboards of automobiles, aircraft and boats, and included a variety of models to address specific needs of racers and rallyists. In 1958, Heuer introduced a line of dashboard timepieces which included the Master Time (eight-day clock), the Monte Carlo (12-hour stopwatch), the Super Autavia (full chronograph), Sebring (60-minute, split second timer) and Auto-Rallye (60-minute stopwatch). Heuer continued to manufacture these dashboard timepieces into the 1980s, before they were discontinued. Heuer also introduced timing devices for ski and motor racing events, including the prestigious Formula 1. TAG Heuer was formed in 1985, when TAG (Techniques d'Avant Garde), manufacturers of high-tech items such as ceramic turbochargers for Formula 1 cars, acquired Heuer. Then, 1999 TAG Heuer became part of the luxury group LVMH Moët Hennessy - Louis Vuitton. Racing is in TAG Heuer’s blood. In 2011, TAG Heuer celebrates 150 years of association with the prestigious world of motor racing. Click here to see the complete collection of TAG Heuer timepieces. |
