deBoulle Diamond & Jewelry is most commonly known for its large selection of fine timepieces and luxury jewelry, but last Thursday evening we had the pleasure of hosting a special event in support of Camp Sweeny. Camp Sweeny supports children with Type I Diabetes. The camp was founded in 1947 and has benefited more than 30,000 children and counting. After more than 60 years of operation, Camp Sweeney is regarded as one of the largest and most effective diabetic educational facilities in the world, offering the only 3-week residential diabetes life skills training program in the United States. Campers learn to recognize and treat the early warning signs of dangerously high and low blood sugar levels. By teaching the skills necessary to maintain tight control of their diabetes, campers are equipped to minimize the complications associated with diabetes in hopes that they will be good candidates once a cure is available.

Our event educated guests about this amazing organization and gave a chance to donate directly to Camp Sweeney. Throughout the evening guests mingled with campers and heard touching stories of how this wonderful camp changed their lives. Through February18, 2012 deBoulle Diamond & Jewelry will be donating 5% of individual sales to Camp Sweeney when presented with a special Camp Sweeney identification card.

Fine timepieces from the likes of like Patek Philippe, Breguet, Blancpain, and Girard-Perregaux have evolved greatly over time. One such complication that came into being because of this technological evolution is the minute repeater. This grande complication allows one wearing wristwatches with the complication to make the timepiece chime the time. One can then not only see the time, but can also hear it played musically! This is all accomplished through a purely mechanical design and because of this it has been dubbed as the most extraordinary grande complication of fine timepieces. The engineering and complexity involved within such a timepiece make the minute repeater a brilliant demonstration of a watchmaker’s skill level and expertise.

Below are some of the most talked about minute repeater watches from brands like Patek Philippe, Breguet, and Girard-Perregaux. deBoulle Diamond & Jewelry is an authorized dealer of each of the watches shown in the photos below. The now famed Unico manufacture chronograph movement has undergone its first ever evolution. Its base will now house a GMT function, which has been entirely developed and manufactured in-house by Hublot. The main technical feature of this GMT complication is that is gives the time in the different time zones using an expert set of 4 rotating aluminium discs. They are controlled by a push-button housed in the case middle at 2 o’clock which allows the discs to be simultaneously positioned, allowing the time in the city, selected from the 14 available, to be instantly and directly read.

With an elegant, practical and functional design, the King Power Unico GMT has a 48 mm dial and is available in two versions, ceramic or King Gold red gold ceramic, featuring a dial which is easy to read despite the wealth of indications it contains, and which allows the beautiful mechanics of the calibre to be admired. With a 72-hour power reserve, this watch will appeal to travelers with an appreciation of fine contemporary watchmaking.

Diego Maradona, the brand ambassador of Hublot, the legendary king of football for the first time takes the “Hublot One Million RMB Goal Shooting” Charity Challenge on The Bund in Shanghai, China. In the beautiful scenery of LuJiaZui and the Bund, Maradona has challenged the eight different values of targets. Joining forces with Maradona, Hublot will generously donate the total fund of corresponding successful shootings to support the Children aid program in China.

With the most king power of football, Diego Maradona’s extraordinary career was blessed with a unique footballing talent. In Argentina and throughout the world, Maradona also known as the “player of the 20th century”, has achieved a plethora of distinctions. The legendary Argentine footballer is well-known for his love of Hublot watches. In March 2010, Hublot, the Swiss luxury watch brand has signed a partnership with the legendary name. Followed by the remarkable 2010 FIFA World Cup, the whole world noticed he was wearing two Hublot watches at once – the Hublot chronograph bearing his own name on each wrist and cheering for his team with the “Hand of God”. Since Maradona joined in Hublot family, the great football passion and the Swiss leading watch brand aroused numerous inspirations. Today, the two legends in which passion, success, excellence and creativity combine again on the Bund in Shanghai.

To celebrate the grand event, the second generation of Hublot Maradona limited edition – The King Power Maradona – in a limited edition of just 500 pieces was globally launched by Diego Maradona and Mr. Jean-Claude Biver, Chairman of Hublot. Bearing the symbolic 10 and Maradona’s signature on the dial, Hublot has developed a special King Power equipped with a chronograph movement distinguished by two centre chrono hands. This makes for better readability – quicker and more efficient. The wearer can keep track of both hands at a glance; the first indicates the seconds and the other hand, specially developed for football indicates the time elapsed out of the 45 mins in each half.

“We share the same value and passion,” declared Jean-Claude Biver, Chairman of Hublot. “We both believe in the philosophy of Sharing and Caring since our partnership started in 2010.

The ultimate luxury is to share the success with those in need. Today, Maradona and Hublot come to Shanghai, China, with all the friends of Hublot to share our success and caring. Thanks to Diego Maradona, we are here to love!

Maradona added: “More than a partnership, I feel to be part of the Hublot family. I met authentic and fantastic people who became my friends. I remember my visit last year to the manufacture in Nyon, it was like feeling almost home. The thing that drew me to Hublot was also their charity efforts. I’m very involved in my community, giving kids opportunities that they wouldn’t otherwise get. Sitting down talking to the people at Hublot, everything came back to family, and that’s me. It’s a perfect relationship from that standpoint.”

Maradona and Hublot are committed to sharing and caring. For the first time, Maradona accepted the challenge of the Hublot One Million Dollar Shooting Challenge in the heart of Moscow’s Red Square on September 29th, 2010. He ultimately raised the total sum of $ 500’000 which was donated to the Raisa Gorbacheva Memorial Institute for Children Hematology and Transplantation at the Pavlov State Medical University of Saint Petersburg. During the short stay in Shanghai, Maradona’s passionate to Children aid charity programs and the global premiere of limited Hublot King Power Maradona brought a series of surprise to all the Chinese football fans and Hublot watch fans.

International megastar, martial arts champion, actor, philanthropic ambassador for social causes in China, Jet Li is a true living legend in his country. He is not only one of the greatest international actors in the kung-fu film world, but also a role model and hero to many generations in Asia. During the last few years, Jet Li has devoted his time and energy to promoting social development in his country, where he founded The One Foundation in 2006. A percentage of the profits from the sale of these watches will be donated by Hublot to this foundation.

Since 2010, Jet Li has been Hublot’s leading ambassador in Asia. Therefore, Dalian in China was the natural choice for Hublot to unveil the Aero Bang Jet Li just before Christmas, the first watch created to pay tribute to the actor. Based on the iconic Big Bang design and in Hublot’s famed, elegant matt black, this black ceramic watch is inspired by many aspects of Jet Li’s life: the skeleton dial is a miniaturisation of the metal trellis found in the celebrated Shaolin temple in China – a symbol with dual significance for Jet Li: this Buddhist religious temple built in the 5th century is now also the home of martial arts training, in particular Chinese Kung-Fu. It is also the title of Jet Li’s first film, which brought him to fame in the role of the defending monk.

The accents of red, such as on the minute track and the stitching on the strap, are a clear reference to China. Lastly, the crystal on the case back has a transfer depicting Yin and Yang, as requested by Jet Li in reference to his life’s philosophy, showing Yin (represented by the black) and Yang (the white). In Chinese philosophy, Yin and Yang are the two complementary categories that can be found in all aspects of life and the universe.

In Preview of the Basel/SIHH 2012 Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 Collection, Enjoy!

At the same time classic and cutting-edge, the Vintage 1945 collection is a symbol of contemporary watchmaking that Girard-Perregaux has been careful to perfect. Taking its strong lines from the Art Deco movement, the new Vintage 1945 Large Date Moon-Phases from Girard-Perregaux incorporates an emblematic design. Its case, with its skilfully rounded shapes in both directions, houses a Girard-Perregaux mechanical movement with automatic winding that displays a large date and moon-phases on an equally curved dial. This contemporary piece is a resounding success in both aesthetic and technical terms.

Girard-Perregaux has made its mark on the history of timeless watches. For over 50 years, the Vintage 1945 collection from Girard-Perregaux has represented an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the Manufacture. Its strong design, alternation of lines and curves, and personality blending classicism with modernity has paved the way for unique creations. These include the legendary limited-edition Vintage 1945 Tourbillon with three gold Bridges featuring rhodium-plated skeletonised bridges, a model for which Girard-Perregaux is known the world over.

With its perfect circle and open case-back that displays the movement, the Vintage 1945 Large Date Moon-Phases from Girard-Perregaux perfectly embodies the spirit of the collection. All the time displays are harmoniously arranged and readable at a glance. At 12 o’clock, the instant large date displays the date on a pair of discs – one of which is transparent – in a patented system. This watch from Girard-Perregaux beats the tempo with a railway minute track that runs around the dial. The hands and applied Arabic numerals display the time with simplicity. The meticulously crafted curved hour markers are particularly delicate. Traditionally positioned at 6 o’clock, the raised moon-phases indicator is presented beneath a sky of perfect clarity.

Combining aesthetics with a beautiful mechanism is a golden rule at Girard-Perregaux. With its 282 components, the calibre Girard-Perregaux 03300-0062 features precision characteristics that are the Manufacture’s own. Exceptionally reliable watch from Girard-Perregaux, it beats to a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The list of finishes resembles an anthology of ornamental High Watchmaking traditions: the rhodium-plated mainplate boasts circular diamond-polishing and circular-graining of the visible and non-functional areas. These preciously decorated bridges create a gentle harmony: circular diamond-polishing, circular-graining on the trottoir and Côtes de Genève decoration. The wheels are gilded, the pivots burnished and the drum of the barrel embellished with a sunray finish.

A masterpiece of elegance and technology, the Girard-Perregaux 1966 Minute Repeater unveils a magnificent mechanism that produces an intense sound. Its acoustic merits and the purity of its lines rely on over 220 years of tradition and excellence of Girard-Perregaux watches. The timepiece symbolises all the expertise associated with Girard-Perregaux timepieces that pushes back the boundaries of watchmaking with grandes complications.

It is one of the few watches to combine mechanical excellence with exceptional musical qualities to such a degree. The Girard-Perregaux 1966 Minute Repeater model pays homage to the most prestigious of Haute Horlogerie traditions. Pure design, noble materials and a beautiful complication: the piece from Girard-Perregaux displays all the signs of an exceptional timepiece.

The classic, elegant exterior of this Girard-Perregaux watch houses one of the greatest of grandes complications: the minute repeater. The invention of repeater watches was originally intended to meet the need to strike the hours during the night before the existence of electric lighting. Today, the charm of striking the hours, quarters and minutes makes it one of the best-loved complications for enthusiasts of beautiful watchmaking.

The construction of the Girard-Perregaux 1966 Minute Repeater watch fully respects the great watchmaking tradition. The creation of the sound relies on a device that requires the presence of two circular gongs coiled inside the case and small hammers that strike them at regular intervals. In order to create a vibration to produce the sound that comes closest to perfection, the tuning of the chimes remains one of the most delicate elements; one that Girard-Perregaux takes particular care in refining.

The watch’s special design required thorough research into acoustic qualities. In particular, the Girard-Perregaux worked on three construction points on the case. The diameter of the calibre and the interior diameter of the case are perfectly balanced, a ratio that guarantees maximum resonance. The case-back is curved in order to increase the volume of air between the movement and the case, which significantly improves the propagation of the sound in this Girard-Perregaux watch. Finally, the lower part of the case-back is diamond-polished, an operation that allows acoustic interference to be reduced.
