IMSA: CTMP Prototype Re-Cap

ISMA CTMP Prototype

Nick Boulle’s first laps in the top category of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship came just a few weeks ago. Teamed for the weekend with David Ostella, both he and Nick would do their first ever laps in a LMP2 car just one day before racing action started at one of North America’s fastest and most demanding race circuits. Mosport is known for its huge elevation changes, high-speed corners and its ruthless nature. With mid-corner speeds as high as 150 mph and walls surrounding the entire track, no mistake goes unpunished.

The weekend started off nice and easy with Nick & David getting up to speed gradually in the Ligier JS-P217 LMP2 car as they learned the track as well as the complex systems involved in running the race car. The car features a 650 horsepower Gibson V8 engine with Cosworth electronics and suspension setup very similar to a Formula 1 car – torsion bars at the front with push-rod rear suspension. In addition, the car generates massive amounts of down force (meaning: the faster you go, the more grip becomes available!).

Nick & David progressed carefully through the weekend’s three practice sessions with an emphasis put on qualifying. On Saturday morning, the gap to the front runners and DPI factory machines dropped substantially. Nick qualified .1 second behind one of the Cadillac DPI cars and just ahead of the Mazda DPI car. The team would set off in 8th position for the race.

During the race, the #52 Prototype moved up one position as the race progressed. Boulle put in a solid double stint that amounted to more than one and a half hour behind the wheel at the demanding circuit before David Ostella took the wheel. Progressing well Ostella held on well in the treacherous wet-dry conditions until 1 lap to go. With rain on parts of the track a slight miscalculation had big consequences. After sliding through the grass and hitting the wall the car rolled violently onto its roof. David crawled out unscathed, but the incident ended the race early.

de Boulle Motorsports’ goals for the weekend were certainly accomplished given the daunting circuit and jump in terms of the LMP2 car. Given such limited track time to learn the car and the circuit before qualifying, out pacing any one of the DPI cars was a huge accomplishment. de Boulle Motorsports is working towards being back on the race track again soon and we look forward to sharing the news!

Nick Boulle To Step Up at Mosport

For the weekend of July 7th to 9th, Nick Boulle will step up to North American endurance racing’s most premier and fastest racing category. The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship features 4 classes of cars starting from GTD, GTLM, PC to Prototype. The Prototype class Nick will compete in features cars from manufacturers such as Cadillac, Mazda, Ligier, Oreca and Nissan that are all based upon a LMP2 car.

This will mark Nick’s first time to compete at the highest level of professional endurance motorsports in North America. Boulle will be returning to a familiar team with PR1 / Mathiasen Motorsports running the number 52 Ligier JS-P217 Gibson powered prototype. These cars also raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans reaching speeds of up to 214mph on the straights of the Mulsanne circuit thanks to having roughly 650 horsepower.

The race will take place at the famous and often treacherous Canadian Tire Motorsport Park just outside of Toronto, Canada. The track, which is 2.5 miles long, features a long back straight and is known for having one of the fastest average speeds of any race track in North America. Thanks to its placement along massive rolling hills with blind exits from many of the fast corners, Mosport is also known as one of the most thrilling driver’s circuits on the continent.

The race will consist of 2hours and 50 minutes of racing waged around the demanding circuit. The field will consist of drivers such as Bruno Senna, Ryan Dalziel, Pipo Derani, Marino Franchitti, Jan Magnussen, and more famous names from around the globe of motorsports.

Nick most recently competed in Austin, TX at the Circuit of the Americas running in a Prototype Challenge car. Alongside his co-driver, Justin Wilson, Nick finished in 2nd place at the Advanced AutoParts SportsCar Showdown.

Nick Boulle’s debut at the 54th Annual ROLEX 24 Hours of Daytona resulted in a second-place finish in the Prototype Challenge (PC) Class. Nick Boulle, the 26-year-old son of Denis and Karen Boulle — of de Boulle, an independent jewelry salon in Dallas and now Houston— was the first retail jeweler which carries Rolex to compete in the demanding 24-hour sports car race.

The race requires four-driver teams. Rounding out the team was returning PR1 driver Tom Kimber-Smith, Robert Alon and Jose Gutierrez. The team raced in the Le Mans Prototype Challenge car. The car featured an open-cockpit and technology such as a carbon fiber chassis, carbon brakes and sequential gearbox. Weighing in at 1990 pounds, the PC car reached top speeds of around 190 mph during the 24 hour event.

The race consisted of 24 hours of straight racing waged on the legendary Daytona International Speedway. It’s the first major auto race of the year, and it brings out some of sport’s biggest names. The team completed 698 laps and 25 pits around the 3.56 mile circuit. Each driver spent about six hours crammed into the car whizzing around the track.

Boulle was the also the PC class leader during the exciting race. “Half way through the race (12 hours) we were still in first, but a small mechanical issue lost us 12 laps. We dropped down to fourth during the night,” said Boulle. The team moved back into second place. If not for a faulty $15 part, the team likely would have won.

Boulle, who had stepped away from motorsports for more than 6 years to grow his social media business, had kept his competitive spirit alive through cycling – winning multiple state championships and finishing on the podium at the collegiate national championships while racing motorcycle great, Ben Spies’ Elbowz Cycling team. When it came time for Nick to drive again and take over driver duties at the 54th annual Rolex 24, he never skipped a beat. With his dad’s love for cars, Nick was drawn to motorsports and began racing go-karts at age 12. By the time he was 20 years old studying at Southern Methodist University, Boulle had produced top results in national events and was racing as a Volkswagen Junior Driver in addition to coaching drivers in karts and racecars. “I have always loved motorsports,” he says, “and racing in the Rolex 24 Hours has turned a dream into reality.”

Meridian Realty Advisors, L.P. opted to partner with de Boulle Motorsports to promote their new community Vista del Mar, a high-rise condominium in Perdido Key, Florida. The Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona represents a huge opportunity to spread the word about the ‘Lost Key’ where Vista del Mar is being built. The LMPC car featured the logo of Vista del Mar. In addition, Boulle donned their logo prominently on his driver’s uniform.
